The Early Months
We had many difficult times during the first weeks after they came home, and it seemed for a long time that things weren’t going to get better. We were so tired and needed a lot of help so we could get some sleep. But slowly things turned around and life started to get a little bit easier. We hired a nanny who helped get Lachlan into a better routine and we attended breastfeeding classes to help Daniel learn to feed. Then the boys started smiling and there was some light in our life. It certainly made all the hard work worth while when one of the boys would turn and smile at you. During the night feeds, Daniel used to spot my face after a burp and almost split his face in half smiling so hard at me. It was like he just realised I was there, and was so happy to see me – “I remember you! I like you!”. It was so sweet. We’d really have to encourage him to start feeding again. I think I was his first crush!
All the grandparents have had a chance to meet the boys and a couple of uncles have caught up as well. Richard’s parents and brother are here in Adelaide, so see the boys on a regular basis. My father and brother came to visit in June and my Mum came by in September to help out while Richard was away. They’ve also been to visit my workmates, to visit friends, to a couple of parties and they’ve caused some mayhem at a parent’s group.
In early July we also took them to get some professional pictures only to have them hysterically crying for the whole session. Luckily we managed to get a few good photos. If we’d waited a week, they would have been smiling and we would have known to take them first thing in the morning instead of last thing in the afternoon. Oh well.
